Cheshire approves demolition of 200-year-old inn

CHESHIRE, Mass. (AP) - Selectmen in the town of Cheshire have approved the demolition of a 200-year-old building that has fallen into disrepair.

The board this week approved a nearly $50,000 contract for the demolition of the Cheshire Inn that waits the approval of town meeting next month. Work is expected to start as soon as approval is granted.

The North Adams Transcript reports that the inn built in the 1790s was once one of the grandest buildings in town, but is now in such poor shape that a hard hat is required just to enter it.

The town seized it from the previous owner in 2011.

The town thought of selling it, but determined the best option was tearing it down.

The future of the site is to be determined.

'Tis the season for skiing

It's the ski season the Northeast has spent two long years waiting for.

"Today's been packed. It's actually been more packed than I've ever seen it today. So that's a good sign. There's definitely a lot of people coming here," said Shawn Maynard, a park ranger at Jiminy Peak.

Sunday night, skiers and boarders were happy to wait in the bitter December chill for the promise of a run down a freshly powdered mountain.

In the case of these locals from Pittsfield, Mass.s, it really was just one run.

"We just came down to take a breather for a minute. It's nice. It's cold out," said snowboarder Anthony Shufelt.

Carrie Phillips and two of her daughters made the trip from Hoboken, N.J. and despite a little trouble with their gear, they did eventually hit the slopes.

National Grid warns customers of scam

National Grid is warning millions of customers about a new scam making the rounds.

The utility company says scammers are going door-to-door, online and calling customers, claiming you can have your bills paid under a federal government program.

They then ask for your social security and bank routing numbers.

The problem; no such federal program exists.

If you receive any such calls or visits, don't give out your personal information and call police.
