LENOX, Mass. (AP) - An effort to draw more Berkshire County residents to the Boston Symphony Orchestra's summer home at Tanglewood appears to be working.
The Berkshire Eagle reports Tanglewood by year-round local residents grew from 3 percent in 2008 to 8 percent last summer.
When presentations by popular music artists are included, the number hits 24 percent.
One enticement to locals allows them to attend all BSO and Boston Pops shows for $75 per season. It costs $200 for others.
The symphony is also trying to draw younger audiences to Tanglewood, such as by offering free lawn tickets for those 17 and under.
That effort is progressing more slowly. Surveys show the average age at Tanglewood's largest facility, the Shed, was down to 68, from 69.
