Rensselaer County man killed in Berkshires

HANCOCK, Mass. (AP) - Massachusetts State Police have released the identity of the Rensselaer County man killed in a car crash in the Berkshires over the weekend.

Police say 24-year-old Michael Demick of Stephentown was driving west on Brodie Mountain Road in Hancock when his vehicle crossed the center line and collided with a vehicle headed east just after 8p on Saturday.

Demick's pickup truck caught fire and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two people in the other vehicle were taken to North Adams Regional Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation but police say speed appears to be a factor.

Search resumes Thursday for missing Mass. girl

ROCKPORT, Mass. (AP) - A state police spokesman says an intensive investigation, including divers and boats, has found no trace of a 2-year-old girl who disappeared last week from a Rockport beach, and has found no evidence she was a crime victim.

David Procopio said Wednesday divers will search again offshore on Thursday for Caleigh Anne Harrison of Gloucester. No more searches are scheduled unless there is new evidence.

Procopio said 24 divers along with boats worked Wednesday off Cape Hedge beach, near Long Beach where she was last seen while playing with her mother and 4-year-old sister.  Her mother says she turned away from the girls for about two minutes to retrieve a ball, and Caleigh was gone when she returned.

Family members are circulating pictures of Caleigh, hoping someone may have seen her.

The Stewart’s Holiday Match Grant checks have been mailed to non-profit organizations who will be receiving the Stewart’s Holiday Match funds.

The money was given by customers and the company and it will help local children’s charities in the 30 counties where there are Stewart’s locations. The 1,455 checks total in $1.4 million in grants. Stewart’s credits the success of the program to their customers, dedicated shop partners and media partners.

“That is a 3 percent increase in the number of Holiday Match grants, compared to last year,” said Susan Dake, Stewart’s Foundation President in a statement. “Thanks to the generosity of our customers, in this flat economy, we were able to respond to the additional requests and bring the total to over $16 million in contributions for the 25 year old program.”
