Dalton soldier killed in Afghanistan remembered

PITTSFIELD, Mass. (AP) - Family and friends are paying final respects to a soldier from Berkshire County killed in Afghanistan.
    
A funeral Mass with full military honors for U.S. Army Spc. Mitchell Daehling was celebrated Friday at St. Agnes Church in Dalton. He received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart posthumously.
    
Daehling was killed by an improvised explosive device May 14.
    
The Dalton resident grew up in Wyoming and Idaho before moving to Massachusetts. He was a graduate of Wahconah Regional High School.
    
Per his wishes, he will be buried next to his grandfather in Idaho. Kenneth Sander served in the Army during the Korean War.
    
Daehling leaves behind a wife whom he married less than a year ago, his parents and two siblings.

Soldier's body returns to Berkshire County

DALTON, Mass. - The body of a soldier killed in Afghanistan is back home.

The remains of Army Spc. Mitchell Daehling arrived in Dalton, Berkshire County late Wednesday morning under military escort.

Daehling was killed last week. 

Calling hours for will be Thursday night at St. Agnes Church in Dalton.

A funeral mass will be celebrated there Friday morning.

Daehling will be awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

He will be buried in Lewiston, Idaho next to his grandfather. That was his final wish.

Berkshire County soldier killed in action

DALTON, Mass. (AP) - A Dalton man is mourning the death of his soldier son who was killed by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan.

Officials at Fort Bliss, Texas, said 24-year-old Army Spc. Mitchell Kirk Daehling is among three soldiers killed in the Tuesday attack.

Kirk Daehling said Friday he remembers his son as someone who "just loved life ... He always had a smile ... He was proud to serve his country." Daehling spoke to The Associated Press shortly after returning from Dover Air Force Base, Del., where he received his son's remains.

Mitchell Daehling was a 2006 graduate of Wahconah Regional High School. He also attended Daniel Webster College in Nashua, N.H.

He is survived by his wife, Samantha - whom he married last June - and two siblings.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Melville's Pittsfield home gets a makeover

PITTSFIELD, Mass. (AP) - The Pittsfield home where Herman Melville wrote "Moby-Dick" is getting a period makeover.

Workers from Historic Preservation Associates are building a Victorian-style porch on the front of the homestead known as Arrowhead. The building is now a Melville museum and home to the Berkshire Historical Society.

Though the house was built in 1780, Arrowhead Executive Director Betsy Sherman tells The Berkshire Eagle the original front porch was added in 1870, likely by Melville's brother. The building has undergone multiple renovations since.

The porch project is part of a series of upgrades planned for the next year, which include painting, the installation of period storm windows, and landscaping.

Funeral in Lenox for Marine killed in Nevada

LENOX, Mass. (AP) - Funeral services are scheduled in Berkshire County for a Marine from Connecticut killed in a training exercise explosion in Nevada this month.

The service for 23-year-old Lance Cpl. Roger Muchnick Jr. is being held at St. Ann's Church in Lenox, Mass., the hometown of his mother's parents.

FORT BELVOIR, Va - Air Force Maj. Aaron M. Maynard was awarded the Joint Meritorious Unit Award for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. This is the fourth time the Defense Threat Reduction Agency has received this award.

The unit's mission is to safeguard the nation and its allies from chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and high-yield explosive weapons of mass destruction by providing the capabilities needed to reduce, eliminate and counter the threat such weapons pose and to mitigate its effect.

The Joint Meritorious Unit Award, established in 1981, is the only ribbon award granted by the Defense Department and is the organizational equivalent of the Defense Superior Service Medal.

Maynard is the commander of 9th Munitions Squadron assigned to the Air Force Combat Ammunition Center at Beale, Air Force Base, Calif.  The major has served in the military for 20 years.

SAN ANTONIO - Air National Guard Airman Antonio Polson has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Polson is the son of Paul Polson of Lanesboro.

He is a 2007 graduate of Mount Greylock High School.
