More area Friendly's close their doors

Unfriendly times continue for the Friendly's restaurant chain. Five more locations in the Capital Region have shut down.

The closed stores include both Latham locations, along with restaurants in Albany, Glenville, and the one in Colonie Center.

That leaves the Capital Region with just five Friendly's locations -- in Clifton Park, East Greenbush, Glens Falls, Saratoga Springs, Troy and Johnstown.

According to Friendly's website, three Berkshire County, Mass. Friendly's also remain open along with a location in Bennington, Vt.

The chain filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in October.

Junior League of Berkshire County to host 'Taste of the Berkshires'

The Junior League of Berkshire County is hosting its 4th annual Taste of the Berkshires event on Thursday, November 3 at the Masonic Temple in Pittsfield.

From 5 to 8 p.m. restaurants from throughout Berkshire County will be represented at this benefit and will be serving “tastings” from their fall menus.

Restaurants to be featured this year include: Perigee, Olde Heritage, Spice Root, Mary's Carrot Cake, Ozzies, Olde Forge, Chocolate Springs, Marketplace, Sarah's Cheesecake, Firefly, Mission, Brulee’s, among others.

This event provides financial support for their community initiatives such as the literacy program Curl up With a Good Book, which provides an evening of family reading in local elementary schools with each child taking home a book at the end of the event and the nutrition-focused Kids in the Kitchen, which teaches children how to make smart nutrition choices in an attempt to address the growing epidemic of childhood obesity. 

McDonald's holds 'National Hiring Day'

WATERVLIET-  Along with Happy Meals and McNuggets, McDonalds was dishing up something else today, 50,000 jobs nationwide.

Today was national hiring day, an opportunity to hire 400 new workers in the Capital Region and get some publicity at the same time.

NewsChannel 13’s John McLoughlin was at the McDonald’s in Watervliet, where he says there was been a steady stream of applicants despite the jobs are all entry level starting at minimum wage.

Pittsfield restaurant plans to open in Albany

A successful food franchise in Pittsfield, Massachusetts now hopes to feed college students in Albany. "Hot Harry’s Fresh Burritos" plans to open a franchise in University Plaza on Western Avenue on the border of the University at Albany campus.

“We targeted the neighborhood near the SUNY campus some time ago and have been biding our time waiting for the right property to become available.  To say we are thrilled to be in Albany is an understatement,” said Samir Abdallah in a statement.  “I couldn’t be more pleased with the way the business has developed as a franchise operation.”

The franchisees, Tim and Kim Donnelly, of Coxsackie have also committed to opening another Hot Harry’s in Glenmont Centre Square at 365 Feura Bush Road, which will be open in Fall 2011.

Restaurant holds its 7th annual Solstice Potluck Jam

Tap dancing will be the talk of the town at a local restaurant on Wednesday.

Its Jae’s Spice 7th annual Solstice Potluck Tap Jam.

A review session will take place for those who’d like to refresh their steps, and the night will progress into a full evening of toe tapping. The event is from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

The cost is $5 or free if you bring food.

The restaurant is located at 297 North Street.

McTeacher’s Night 2010 raises thousands for education

Fourty-eight local schools teamed up with McDonalds restaurants of the Capital Region to raise $ 17,551.20 towards educational programs.  

This annual fundraising event was held on April 15, 2010 from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m., where principals, PTA presidents and teachers from participating schools partnered with hundreds of McDonald’s employees at restaurants in Albany, Schenectady, Troy, Watervliet, Lee, Pittsfield, Adams and North Adams, Delmar, Clifton Park, Schaghticoke and Ballston Spa, Queensbury, Hudson, Johnstown, Gloversville and Middleburgh and surrounding areas.  Raising funds for their schools, cooperators assisted employees in welcoming customers, receiving food orders, and food preparation.
